A B S T R A C T - - A new species of flat mite, Brevipalpus salasi sp. n., is described from Costa Rica. It was collected on Spondias purpurea L. (Spanish prune) at Guadarrama de Desamparados, province of San Jose.

INTRODUCTION The studies on Central American flat mites have been scarce. There is only one paper dealing with the genus Brevipalpus in Costa Rica (Manson, 1963). On the other hand, Baker et al (1975) and DeLeon (1960, 1961) reported species o f Brevipalpus in Mexico which also are present in Costa Rica (Ochoa, 1985). This paper describes a new species of flat mite associated with Spanish prune (Spondias purpurea L.) in Costa Rica. All measurements are given in microns.

Brevipalpus salasi spec. nov. DIAGNOSIS: Females of B. salasi sp. n. resemble those of B. californicus(Banks) as well as B. ardesiae DeLeon but it can be distinguished by the presence of a single solenidion on tarsus II. FEMALE: (Figs. 1-3) Color reddish-brown; length 205.08 _+ 2.1 l, width 118.26 _+ 2.12. Body with a uniform reticulate pattern in its dorsomedial region and finely punctate dorsocentrally; hysterosoma with short, irregular lines. Dorsolateral surfaces less sculptered and smooth, with striated band on border. Hysterosomal pores present. Six dorsolateral hysterosomals setiform (6.44 _ 0.41). Propodosomal setae II and III lanceolate and pilose (11.93 _+ 1.05). Ventrally, propodosomal pattern finely crenulate medially and laterally; central area with irregular lines; crenulate pattern between metapodosomal setae. Ventral plate uniformly reticulate at edges, wider than long.

Genital plate reticulate, wider than long. Rostrum not extending beyond distal end of femur I. Palpus with 2 setae and a sensory rod at distal end. Tarsus II with one sensory rod (4.24 _+ 0.31). MALE: Unknown. N Y M P H : (Fig. 4). Idiosoma smooth, with tenuous pointed and some delicate lines between metapodosoma and propodosoma. All idiosomal setae lanceolate and pilose. H O S T AND LOCALITY: Holotype female, paratype female, nymphs and one larvae were collected at Guadarrama de Desamparados, San Jose, Costa Rica (Coll. O. Badilla, 1984), on Spanish prune (Spondias purpurea L.), Holotype: Deposited in the collection of the Laboratorio de Acarologia, Facultad de Agronomia, Universidad de Costa Rica, San Jose, Costa Rica. This species is named in honor of Ing. Luis A. Salas who has spent many years working on mites in Costa Rica. REMARKS This mite produces an irregular yellowing on the leaves of Spanish prune and small leprosis on the fruit epidermis. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I thank Dr. Edward W. Baker, Systematic Entomology Laboratory, ARS, USDA, Beltsville, MD, USA, for confirming this as an undescribed species.
