Influential Game Designers A Bloomsbury/Continuum Book Series

Game designers turn experiences into systems. The act of play turns these systems back into experiences. Influential Game Designers is a book series published by Bloomsbury/Continuum and edited by Jennifer deWinter and Carly A. Kocurek. It is the first series to take seriously the role of the game designer. By profiling game designers who have shaped contemporary video gaming, this series provides insights into the practice, history, and artistry of game design. This series responds to a growing interest in the artistic and cultural value of games and an increased focus on the practice of game design. Combining critical essays with interviews, bibliographies, and striking visuals, this series will provide gamers, industry professional, and scholars with a history of the games they love and the design teams behind them, focusing on both the processes and products of game design. Each volume places the work of these designers in their particular context—historical, cultural, industrial—in order to provide readers rich descriptive and critical insight into the design visions of these gamic storytellers.

Call for Proposals

If you are interested in proposing a book for the series, please send a query to the editors ([email protected] and jdewinter.wpi.edu) with a brief description detailing the following (approximately one paragraph): s Which designer you would like to write about s A brief list of competing books s An overview of your analytical structure. Please also attach your CV to your query. We want to give you an advanced contract, so we ask for two chapters that will go for external peer review and a coverletter that includes: s s s s

A short argument for the relevance of this designer’s influence on the game industry 1-2 paragraphs per chapter providing an overview of your intended focus A list of games credited to this designer A timeline

Completed books will be 40-45,000 words (or about four content chapters, an interview chapter, a brief conclusion, and a gameography). All books are subject to a blind peer review process. Series editors are Carly A. Kocurek ([email protected]) and Jennifer deWinter ([email protected])
