What is consumerism?
It refers both to accumulation, purchase and consumption of goods and services that are considered as nonessential.
Or by other words it means buying things - and more things, and more things....
and then using them up once - or throwing them away.

History of consumerism
Originally used in 1915 by OXFORD dictionary "interests of consumers"
First civilization before industrial revolution people tend to buy their basic needs
After the industrial revolution:
mass production implied mass consumption, a point in time where consumerism began.

- One major cause was the industrial revolution, the other support to consumerism is globalization, and today it has reached most of the regions of the world.

Factors affecting consumerism
It is highly promoted by certain factors because we have the belief that having more acquisitions makes you more important. Its practice is associated with obtaining self satisfaction and even personal happiness.
Some of these factors:
Need
Overcrowding of material
Television and media advertisements
Culture
Status
Affection in things

Most "consumers" live in the North
If you live in one of the rich, industrialized countries of the North, you will consume much more of the Earth's resources than most of your fellow human beings who live in the developing countries of the South.
For example, you will consume:

19 times more aluminum
14 times more paper
13 times more iron and steel
10 times more energy
3 times more fresh water
Top 10 waste producers in the world
1- united states
2- Australia
3- Iceland
4- Norway
5- Switzerland
6- Luxembourg
7- France
8- Denmark
9- Ireland
10- Netherlands
Developed countries produce more waste per capita because they have high levels of consumption
Why it is a global issue
But the biggest problem is not what we, as individuals, throw away. The biggest problem is the very large amount of waste that is produced in making the things that we buy and use.
For example, in the USA:
around 15 trillion kilos of waste produced
in extracting gas, coal, oil & minerals;
136 billion kilos of chemicals used in
manufacturing and processing;
320 billion kilos of hazardous waste from
chemical production.
And here came the problem by exporting
waste from developed to developing countries

Effects of consumerism
Produces unnecessary waste
Increments pollution
Exporting pollution and waste from developed countries to developing one
Deteriorates the environment through the misuse of land and resources
Increases obesity rates due to excessive consumption
Cycle of disparities and poverty
Disrespect animal rights

Recommendations
Teach people how to think green before they shop
Create campaigns for people to know the importance of recycling
Applying the 3 Rs this way reducing waste will be simpler
Teach people how to reduce waste generated by consumerism

Consumerism & trash
Are we packaging and purchasing our way to the next health crisis?

What can individuals do to fight consumerism in highly materialistic societies such as China and the US? And who should take this initiative?
How can we make money encouraging people to consume less?
