Do Not Despair: One of the Thieves was Saved Lorenzo Ruga, SMITH Do not despair; one of the thieves was saved – St. Augustine. At the beginning of the exposition of the Philosophy of Ricoeur, he gives us vigor to the meaning of human existence. Ricoeur posed a question, “What is the meaning of being human? Beginning with the hermeneutics or interpretation of the self, Ricoeur mentions the capacity of the self: to speak, to act, to narrate, to promise, to forgive. And these activities of the self makes himself to do with sense. Human being is not altogether a loser, as Sartre negativity of “despair unto death”, but it is a person that can be happy, who can desires to be, though it cannot be denied the fact of losing, of pain, of sadness, yet losing does not define a man to stop in its activities, putting end to activities and meaningful acts of love but always to pursue “yes” even to the experience of many sadness and the realization of finitude. (I am here reminded of the Yes of the Blessed Mother). Having explained the Fiat of the Blessed Mother, he said that the most beautiful words ever spoken was yes, referring to her who obeyed the will of God and the other “yes” is also the most dangerous word (referring to Satan, or Adam and Eve who said yes to sin). Human being must commit itself to possibility for he is a possibility, a being that goes on and the not giving up. After the deaths and aftermath of Yolanda, yes they have lost their livelihood, their dear loved ones, but aftermath does not define to stop living but to again rise up and recover. Man can recover and he will recover. It will be non-sense to give up for there is so much in going on. Ricoeur stresses that amidst the abundance of non-sense is the superabundance of sense. We are not losers. We just have to say yes to everyday challenges. Ricoeur is very aware of the tensions and conflict in everyday life. It is not desiring that once and for all, everything is fixed like the illusions of utopian society, but life is just to say yes and to desire to be. Aware of man’s many imperfections, like for example quarrel of couples about petty things, separation is not the solution, but the two must accept the reality of challenges and altogether inspire one another to carry one’s burden. It is not nothing that has the final word but the primary affirmation. Ricoeur situates us to the mentality, asking what is better - to give up or to go on? It is not emphasizing what can giving up do to oneself, but putting us to the sense of what so much we can have if we go on and on. The song My Heart Will Go On in the Titanic movie is versed: “Near, far wherever you are, I believe that my heart will go on. Once more, you’d opened the door, and you’re here in my heart and my heart will go on and on.” Amidst complexities that are evident in life, God has given us the faculty of the Will, which capacitates us to keep the meaning of life go on, the power to exist creatively. Why there is something rather than nothing? Well, because there was indeed something first. “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 15:13)
