PREFACE Special Issue: CGI ’98 This special issue has its origin in the Computer Graphics International 1998 (CGI ’98) conference. The CGI ’98 conference took place in Hannover (Germany) from June 22 to June 26, 1998. This was the 16th CGI conference and it was the first CGI conference to be organized in Germany. F.-E. Wolter, one of the two guest editors of this special issue, was the organizer of the CGI ’98 conference. About 250 people attended the conference. There were 114 different contributions presented, 95 of which are contained in the proceedings of the CGI ’98 conference edited by F.-E. Wolter and N. M. Patrikalakis and published by the IEEE Computer Society (order number PRO8445; ISBN 0-8186-8445-3). With respect to the number of presented contributions the CGI ’98 congress appears to be still the largest scientific computer graphics conference that has been organized in Germany. All the papers presented at the congress underwent careful review. After the conference the two guest eidtors of this special issue looked again into the conference papers and analyzed the reviews of the papers. As a result, the guest editors invited some authors to prepare extended and improved versions of their papers and to submit them for this special issue of Graphical Models. The selection of those invitees was essentially based on two criteria: that the original conference papers were ranked particularly well with respect to the reviews they had obtained for inclusion in the conference proceedings and that those papers fell within the scope of Graphical Models. The new versions of those invited papers were submitted to the guest editors by the end of 1998. These new versions again underwent careful review involving an average of three to four reviews per paper, very often with input from the world’s most qualified experts in the particular subject area. Unfortunately this process was quite time-consuming, resulting in a final acceptance notification (requesting still further editorial corrections) at the end of July 1999. We gratefully acknowledge here the help of the 15 reviewers involved in the final review of this special issue of Graphical Models.
