A construção do estilo de improvisação de Vinicius Dorin

This thesis aimed at investigating saxophonist Vinicius Dorin's creation of an improvisation-based style, and how this process has been influenced by his participation in Hermeto Pascoal's group. We considered the rhythmic, harmonic and melodic elements developed within Pascoal's group, excluding conceptions of solo works such as "Som da Aura", for example. Twenty-five Dorin-improvised solos were transcribed, and then analyzed in accordance with a bibliographical material providing of jazz, as this musical art comprehends procedures that are inherent to improvised music. When improvising, the musician must do quick choices that are strongly influenced by his/her musical background. By means of analyses and interviews, we verified in the peculiar way in which Dorin synthesized his stylistic influences – notedly bebop and Pascoal's music – and how this interferes in his process of aesthetic choice when improvising, that is to say, when creating music in real time.
