STRESS AND STRAIN. BASIC CONCEPTS OF CO~INUL~4 MECHANICS FOE GEOLOGISTS Means, W D New York: Sl~inger Verlag, 1976, 338P This is an elementary text book on stress strain theory for geologists, particularly students of structural geology 8md tectonics. It comprises ~ sections: (I) introductions (2) stress, (3) deformation ami strain, incl~ing infinitesimal ard finite strain ten, ors anl strain history, (4) relations between stress ~ strain for ideally alastic amd ideally viscous materials.

Properties of Rocks and Soils 794007 DISCRETE NUMERICAL MODEL FOR GRANULAR ASSEMBLIES Cundsll, P A; Strack, 0 D L Geotechnlque, V29, Nl, March 1979, ~%7-65 The distinct element method described is a ~ical model capable of describing the mechanical bahaviour of assemblies of discs and spheres. The method is based on the use of an explicit ~ i c a l scheme in which i~eraction of the particles is monitored com~ac~ by contact amd the motion of the particles modelled particle by particle. The method is validated by comparing force vector plots obtalmmi from the computer program with the corresponding plots obtained from a photoelastic RnA]ysis of an assembly of discs.
