Abstract  Tine Gammeltoft provides an ethnographic analysis of the obstetrical ultrasound imaging 

practices of women in Hanoi, Vietnam, describing its relation to the Vietnamese social ideology  of reproductive normality.  Research was conducted through interviewing urban, and some rural  Hanoi women in different stages of their motherhood.  The results showed that while expecting  mothers feared and distrusted this ultrasound technology, they felt compelled by medical  physicians and social pressures to determine if their child was “developing normally.”  Gammeltoft concludes with an encouragement for anthropologists to go beyond the setting of  any issue and investigate the outlying social structures that fuel this issue.      II. Critical Analysis  Gammeltoft’s research shows explicitly the dangers of commodifying reproduction;  health sector reforms left physicians needing to generate revenue by advising women to receive  more ultrasounds than is safe.  Economics and culture clash as one sees a serious contradiction of  beliefs and actions in Hanoians’ reproductive lives that confuses the idea of what is “right.”    For the massive population of Hanoi, the research sample seemed too small to accurately  represent the citizens.  A thorough investigation of urban mothers was provided but, the lack of 

rural mothers’ inputs leaves a gap in the analysis that could provide significant conclusions on  the issue.      III. Discussion Questions  1.) In comparison to Chapman’s ​Family Secrets​, and the beliefs of the Mucessuan women on  biomedical prenatal practices, how do the beliefs of Hanoian women on ultrasound  imaging differ? How are they similar?  2.) How does the Hanoian women’s fear and distrust of, yet their persistent use of,  obstetrical ultrasound imaging relate to specific biomedical practices in the United States  or elsewhere? Why do you think this contradiction of beliefs and actions continues to  occur in Hanoi, specifically, even though it is unsafe?   3.) What are some limitations of Gammeltoft’s research? Is the importance of the rural  mothers’ input underplayed? Do you believe the outcome of the research would’ve been  different if Gammeltoft would’ve provided more information on the reproductive lives of  these rural women?
