Folk Commodification The dream catchers made by the Native Americans of Brentwood were first made to ward away evil spirits in dreams. Now, these dreamcatchers have diffused to the public and are being sold to people for decoration rather than for their original purpose.

Folk Transportation Many Amish use horse-drawn carriages as a mode of transportation. Because they believe in not using technology, the Amish use these traditional means of transportation. Some folk cultures have acculturated with pop culture by using more advanced ways of getting around, like in simple cars. This strays from their traditional ways, but is meant to keep them safer on the roads.

Folk Food The pie and candy were homemade by an Amish family. Because they have no access to technology, they made these foods using only scratch materials. These foods are an example of material culture of the Amish, as they are all tangible and used by the culture.

Folk Housing Because folk cultures, like the Amish, tend to avoid modern technology and popular customs, they often live in small, simple homes. It would go against the traditions of their culture to live in a large, luxurious house.

Folk Clothing The clothes the Amish wear might seem outdated to us. They create and wear older styles of clothing than most people would wear to preserve their culture. Because they keep the same fashion, there is no cultural core among the Amish that decides what is “the new trend.”

Popular Sports Today, sports are primarily played for the purpose of entertainment. Some modern, well known sports are football, basketball, lacrosse, and golf. These sports have diffused into all areas of the world due to their popularity. The studies of cultural ecology can show that humans manipulate the environment in massive ways for sports, such as building a stadium or creating a golf course.

Popular Placelessness McDonald’s, the world’s most popular fast food restaurant, is everywhere. It’d be extremely difficult for someone to figure out the exact toponym of where they are just by seeing a nearby McDonald’s.

According to the book, Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the AllAmerican Meal, more people recognize the golden arches than the cross †

Popular Music This type of musical instrument is a very popular one that is used widely throughout the world. It relies on electricity to work properly and the music created from it is often altered with technology. Popular music can often come in all kinds of languages so a wider audience can enjoy it.

Popular Food This cereal is a popular cereal that many people know and eat. It is not naturally or hand made. Because of this, it is not a part of folk culture.

Popular Clothing This type of clothing is not outdated. Many people wear this style of outfit, as it is popular all around the world. The companies are very large, and have factories all around the world to produce these clothes. Clothing is a huge part of popular culture because what is “in fashion” is constantly changing and being spread from clothing capitals (like Paris, France) through hierarchical diffusion.
