What is Cultural Assessment? Cultural Assessment is a core cultural planning process that: creates a population profile or portrait of a community; identifies & makes inventory of cultural resources or assets that exist in an area; analyzes this information to define relationships, & identifies gaps & opportunities for working collaboratively.

Community Cultural Assessment Approach (i) This approach brings together mapping & consultative phases of local area planning: Use demographic data (e.g. census) to identify relevant characteristics of the local population. Examine cultural & social needs of different groups within population. Categorize, list and/or map area’s cultural resources:

e.g. facilities, activities, people, organizations, valued places & landscapes, previous cultural projects, community services or facilities, economic activities. Identify plans for new or expanded cultural resources. Consider relationships between area’s various cultural resources. Identify barriers of access to cultural development activities by different population groups. April 3, 2016

Community Cultural Assessment Approach (ii) Examine actual or potential leadership & support roles in cultural development of civic, social, educational, religious, business & other organizations. Overview strengths & weaknesses in community cultural activity. Evaluate existing facilities/programs & needs for new or expanded ones;

Evaluate outcomes & appropriateness of previous cultural projects & activities; Consider relationships between cultural development & other areas of activity (e.g. tourism, employment).
