This article aims to discuss the possible relationship between some debates in theory and teaching of history, considering the concept of historical consciousness. From March, up to December 2015 it was carried out a field work along four classes of elementary public school Célia Rabelo, which belongs to the Duque de Caxias County, Rio de Janeiro State. During the year, were carried out educational practices with two 7th year classes and two 8th year classes as well. The main goal was to stimulate student reflection on issues related to the school curriculum, but also to understand how the students were building their historical consciousness. To make it possible, were selected some historical themes to develop in their regular classes, especially those concerned to the debate about social differences and, equally, about the possible forms of ethnic and racial identification.
