Colonização salvífica: os jesuítas e a Coroa portuguesa na construção do Brasil (1549-1580)

RESUMOColonização salvífica é um estudo do empreendimento missionário da Companhia de Jesusno Brasil, no período compreendido entre 1549 e 1580, ou seja, ano do início da atividadeapostólica da Ordem até o momento inicial da União Ibérica, quando os inacianos perderamo monopólio na evangelização dos indígenas. Fundamentado nas cartas escritas pelosjesuítas, o trabalho demonstra como os princípios teológicos da salvação católicaestabeleceram a lógica da atividade missionária e, de igual maneira, como o processoamplo de evangelização nos domínios ultramarinos de Portugal, no século XVI, ditou adinâmica em que ela (a missão) se processou. Estudada a partir desse processo maior, amissão no Brasil foi parte constitutiva de uma reforma promovida por D. João III no seuimpério marítimo. Sendo assim, os jesuítas trabalharam na criação de um ambientefavorável à salvação da alma ameríndia, tida como pagã, e construíram estratégias deconversão a partir da relação política que Portugal havia estabelecido com seu domínio naAmérica. Atuando nesse sentido, os missionários acabaram por contribuir para a construçãoda nascente sociedade colonial, responsabilizando-se, assim, por uma colonização salvífica,ao lado de outras pelas quais o Brasil passou.Palavras-chave: jesuítas, Coroa portuguesa, evangelização, colonização, Brasil Colonial.ABSTRACT“Colonização salvífica” is a study of the action of the Company of Jesus in Brazil, in the period understood between 1549 and 1580, that is, year of the beginning of the activities of the order until the initial moment of the Iberian Union, when the Jesuitshad lost the monopoly in the conversion of the aboriginals. Based on the letters written for the Jesuits, the work demonstrates as the theological principles of the catholic salvation had established the logic of the mission of the Jesuits and, also, that the process of conversion of the colonies of Portugal, in century XVI, dictated the dynamics where the mission if it processed. Studied from this bigger process, the mission in Brazil was constituent part of a reform promoted for D. João III in its maritime empire. Being thus, the Jesuits had worked in the creation of an environment favorable to the salvation of the aboriginal soul, considered heathen, and its strategies of conversion had been based on the political relation that Portugal had established with its colony in America. Acting in this direction, the missionaries had contributed for the construction of the new colonial society, making responsible, thus, by one “colonization that produced salvation”, one of the colonization’s promoted in Brazil.Key-words: Jesuits, Portuguese monarchy, conversion, colonization, Colonial Brazil.
