Constructivist Resume Paper

Jason Clabaugh

COAD 6402: Career Development and Counseling

East Carolina University

March 28, 2012

Dr. Mark B. Scholl

The best way to begin my constructivist action plan is to go backwards
in time. My philosophy has always been and will continue to be that a
person has to know where they came from to know where they are going. That
being said, I have known since the age of five that I wanted to be some
kind of educator. From my elementary years through high school, I was
always helping teachers grade papers and exams, playing "school", and in
high school I even job shadowed what it would be like to be an eleventh
grade English teacher for a day. As the years passed my teachers always
took me under their wing and encouraged me to take college level
preparatory classes. Both of the aforementioned individuals happened to be
English teachers which is what put the idea in my head. However, during my
senior year of High School, I took an Intro to Accounting class and an
Intro to Business class. I did very well and it seemed that the choice had
been made business education was my calling. I enrolled in college during
the fall of 2003 as a freshman with the intent of becoming a business
education teacher in grades 7-12. However, as often happens in life things
got in the way. After several major changes (including Family and Consumer
Science Education, and Child Development) I could not pass the math portion
of the PRAXIS exam which was required for teacher licensure in
Pennsylvania.

As it happened, it was also during my freshman year in college that I
began to learn what the field of Student Affairs was all about. Several of
the residence life staff members at my institution were enrolled in the
graduate level program at that time. Those that know me well understand
that if I want something bad enough I will find a way to get it – student
affairs had become my gateway into the field of education. I began doing
everything I possibly could to get involved in the field as an
undergraduate including working in admissions, the registrar's office, and
summer orientation. At the graduate level, health awareness, financial aid,
and student conduct. In May 2010, I finally graduated with my Master of
Arts degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education.
That summer was rough to say the least. The job market and university
budgets were tight and jobs were not coming. My best friend would end up
passing away due to circumstances beyond his control which brings me to the
reason I am completing the certificate program in Substance Abuse at East
Carolina University. Finally, in October 2011 I accepted a position at
Georgia Southern University as an Academic Advisor in the Psychology
department. This brings me to the present:
The Plans of Mice and Men
I have found that helping others is my true calling in life. I love
academic advising – that is guiding students as they take that next big
step in their lives, and of course keeping them on track for graduation. I
have found that academic advising has a major career component to it –
hence the reason for taking this course! I know for a fact that after
working so hard to get into higher education I am going to stay there. My
goal is to become an academic advising center coordinator, eventually
overseeing an entire team. At the same time I love drug and alcohol
rehabilitation as well. This is an area that I had never thought of until
my friend passed away. So my second goal is to open someday (and this is a
lofty goal) a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center that specializes in
not only helping clients recover and make the choices that are best for
them but also prepares them to go to college or vocational/technical
school. If I achieve this goal, it will be the best of both worlds. I will
still be working in student affairs, and work in substance abuse counseling
at the same time.

The Road to Hell is paved with Good Intentions

Another friend of mine who is also a substance abuse counselor in
Pennsylvania, would like to open his own facility someday. Until that
happens, I will continue on as an academic advisor. In order to advance in
higher education however, I will need to obtain my doctorate, which I
planned on doing anyway. I plan to stay involved in professional
organizations such as NACADA – The National Academic Advising Association,
and provide service to the institution conducting research, and serving on
various committees. After getting a few years of experience under my belt,
I plan to move to North Carolina. I love it there for several reasons but
the number one is that it is one of the few southern states that has a good
educational system. Georgia Southern will be in my life for several years
to come probably until I complete my doctorate. Once I am established in
both the field of higher education and substance abuse counseling, my role
in a facility would include management and oversight of the budget, hiring,
training, and selecting new staff, developing curriculum for the substance
abuse classes as well as the college prep classes and assisting staff as
necessary. Dreams are an important part of one's life and I believe that I
have laid out a solid map for myself – I'll just have to wait and see where
my career path takes me.
