25

 Or, 26

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 Do you see it as the symbol of prosperity & sacred? (Hinduism/ Buddhism)

27

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 Example II  What about this number?

 A simple number or representation of bad luck or death? (Korea and China) 28

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 Is it important to understand this? YES!  World is getting smaller.

 It is important that we understand the dos and don’ts of different cultures: • To be able to understand their ways.

• To be able to interact with them. • To be able to do business with them.

29

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 Imagine a certain business context.  You are a manager in an American company, and you are invited to negotiate a contract with a company from U.A.E.  How will you prepare yourself?  You may ask yourself:

30

How will you dress?

How will you greet your counterparts?

How will you negotiate?

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 These light yet critical questions often have a HUGE impact on the outcome/performance.  The best ways to prepare yourself are to ask:  How do people in U.A.E dress in meetings?  How do they greet ?  How formal or informal are these negotiations?

 Understanding the differences will often hold the key to the success! 31

Cross-Cultural Management

(cont.)

 It is often very easy to offend people from other cultures.  Why?  Things that are ‘cool’ in your culture may be ‘ugly’ in another.  Some behaviors which are ‘cool’ in one culture may be ‘offensive’ to others in another.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTE0G9amZNk
