Digital Detox Assignment
For this assignment, you will avoid all media that have screens for 48 consecutive hours, which includes avoiding things such as • Any activity on your cell phone • Video games except a voice call • Computers • Television • The Internet • Movie screens The only exception is for your schoolwork. This assignment is worth 15 percent of your grade. Dates Overview of the assignment during class: Monday, Oct. 5 Opportunity to ask questions during class about the assignment: Oct. 12 and Oct. 14. Please read this assignment description before asking a question. Feel free to follow up with questions during office hours with me or our graduate teaching fellows. Our office hours are listed on page five of the syllabus. Assignment due: Oct. 19 Assignment returned: Nov. 2 Length The essay needs to be four pages. Also see the length restrictions below. This means you’ll need to condense your information and choose the most interesting aspects to focus on. Structure (a) Introduction (no more than a half page, do not use a subhead for the introduction) a. Summarize what you were asked to do in one to two sentences (e.g., “For my Media and Society class…). b. What were your thoughts, feelings and expectations about the media fast before you started it? (two or three sentences) c. How did you feel during and after the 48 hours without the media? (three to four sentences) d. Comment on your overall experience. (one sentence that sets up the rest of the paper – perhaps write this sentence last) Avoid hyperbole. Write with precision (e.g., avoid statements such as “I thought I was going to die when…” and “I couldn’t wait for it to be over”).
(b) My Experience (roughly a page, use this subhead or something similar) Start with a sentence that introduces this topic and use multiple paragraphs. For what purposes do you usually use the media? For each purpose, disclose whether you decided to fulfill the need in another way. If you did seek an alternative, what did you do and how did your alternative work out for you? Add reflective content, such as talking about your listening and interactions with people. This section needs to be one to two pages, depending on your experience. Remember to start with a sentence that introduces this section and use multiple paragraphs. (c) Reaction to The Shallows (roughly a page and a half, use this subhead or something similar) Reflect upon chapter seven from The Shallows. This assigned reading is located in the Modules and Assignments sections of Canvas. Imagine you’re writing for someone who has not read the book, so make sure to tell the reader what you’re reacting to from the book before sharing your thoughts. Most of the content in this section should be your analysis, not a summary of the chapter. Focus on reflecting upon what the book said as it relates to your experiences, for example, did the absence of devices lead you to more deep thinking than usual? If this section is primarily a summary of the chapter, it would be graded as a 3/5 for this section on the grading rubric (see p. 5 of this handout). Remember to start this section with a sentence that introduces this part of the discussion. This section should be one and a half to two pages. You will need to cite your source. You must refer to the title of the book and provide the author and year of it the first time you mention it in APA style. Example: In They Don’t Teach Corporate in College, Levit and Jansen (2009) share advice for recent graduates who are starting their professional careers. After you have cited the book title, author and year of publication once, matching the APA format above, you do not need to cite it again; however, if you quote the book, you can include the corresponding page number. Example: Levit and Jansen explained, “A lot of the important decisions are made at a high level. You should not consider your visibility efforts a failure if your ideas are nixed” (p. 124). Limit any direct quote to one or two sentences. Avoid laziness in your writing by attempting to paraphrase the material in your own words before resorting to quoting it. Do not use more than one direct quote to be eligible for a perfect score on the writing quality.

Also, as modeled in the previous example, avoid weird personifications by identifying the person who stated something, as opposed to writing that the book stated something.
(d) Insights About Myself (a paragraph, use this subhead or something similar) Describe what you learned about yourself from this experience. This section should be a paragraph. Remember that the assignment can be no longer than four pages, excluding the reference section. (e) Reference Use this APA citation format: Carr, N. (2011). The shallows: What the Internet is doing to our brains. New York: Norton.

The next section would flow from here. Grading Your grade is based on the quality of the content, writing quality and source citation, and the number of basic proofing errors. A copy of the grading rubric for the assignment is on the next page. The basic proofing error category refers to mistakes that anyone in junior high should be able to catch, such as a missing word, quotation marks facing the wrong way, or a spelling error. Slowly proof a printed copy of your work the day after completing it and read it slowly to catch basic proofing errors. Writing Lab The Teaching and Learning Center offers writing feedback. You can drop by or make an appointment (541-‐346-‐3226). It is open Monday-‐Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Prince Lucien Campbell Hall, room 72. Bring the assignment instructions with you.
