What is e-assessment? This is not as simple a question as it might appear. e-Assessment is the use of information technology for any assessment-related activity. This definition embraces a wide range of student activity ranging from the use of a word processor to on-screen testing. Due to its obvious similarity to e-learning, the term e-assessment is becoming widely used as a generic term to describe the use of computers within the assessment process. It covers virtually all aspects of assessment activity where the computer is used to develop tasks, deliver them, and then collect the responses and mark them, and return results to candidates.

Also known as … e-Assessment means many things to many people, and comes under many different names and titles such as: Computer-based Assessment (CBA) Computer-based Testing (CAT) Computer Assisted Assessment (CAA) Computerized Assessment Computer-aided Assessment Web-based Assessment Screen-based Assessment Technology-enhanced Assessment

Why use e-assessment? e-Assessment offers a range of potential benefits, some of them can be:  Item trialling : Cost effective way to develop test items  Easy-to-deploy : No need to distribute paper exams and collect for marking  Accessible for all candidates, including those with specific learning difficulties Extra time can be added to the test for candidates SLD Larger fonts and adjusted colors option available to candidates with Special Educational Needs Voiceovers can be created and delivered through headphones  Secure test delivery and improved reliability over human marking  Fast results processing; immediate results to the candidate  Common interface and technology –making the test delivery experience the same for all candidates  Option to deliver the tests at different times and locations to suit the candidate's needs  Enhanced question styles which incorporate interactivity and multimedia
