Editorial developments at Lethaia Blackwell Publishing Ltd

This year sees a change in the editorial team at Lethaia, with Peter Doyle taking over from Svend Stouge as editor-in-chief. Svend takes on the role of editor-in-chief for the Palaeontological Association, and will no doubt apply the same level of dedication and palaeontological insight that he has given to Lethaia over the last decade. Svend will continue as a valued editorial Board Member, and we thank him for his hard work. Peter Doyle is a Mesozoic molluscan palaeontologist with 25 years editorial experience. Dave Harper and Alan Owen continue as editors, and we are actively looking to add a third editor to compliment the current expertise of the team. The composition of the editorial board has also changed as a number of members have come to the end of their terms; new names and fresh experience are an important part of the development of the journal. With the editorial changes come some new areas of development. Lethaia Review articles are particularly sought after, and are expected to provide authoritative reviews across the range of palaeobiological and stratigraphical subjects that compose the core of Lethaia. These will be supported by innovative keynote Lethaia Foundation Lectures, which will be given at appropriate international conferences – supported, not un-naturally, by the Lethaia Foundation – the text to be published in Lethaia itself. The journal will continue to solicit short notes, discussions (Lethaia Seminars),

discussions of current research issues (Lethaia Forums), but in keeping with the editorial decision some years ago to exclude the publication of new taxa (genera and below), will no longer accept ‘Nomenclatural Notes’ or systematic appendices to avoid any confusion. This allows Lethaia to play to its palaeobiological, taphonomic and stratigraphic strengths. Our sister journal Fossils and Strata will continue to publish high-quality, monographic work. We intend to change the cover image on a regular basis, too; suitable illustrations can be submitted for consideration. The editorial team will be delighted to discuss these issues with prospective authors, as required. Finally, in its 42nd year, it is pertinent for us to remind our readership about the origin of our name. In Greek Mythology, Lethaia was the wife of Olenus, who was turned into stone on Mount Ida, punished by the Gods for hubris, a lack of humility. Although our logo is Paradoxides, this explains our long association with trilobites, taphonomy and stratigraphy!
