E-SYNC is the common tangential bond which brings together the entire Electronics & communication Engineering Department, students and faculty alike. The main objective behind the “ESYNC REVISTA ” is to strengthen this bond by bringing up a platform to share information and ideas. Engineering is incomplete without application, a college is incomplete without its student’s expressions and technology is incomplete without innovation. This edition is a special one as it is dedicated to notion breaking ideas and stories. You will find a variety of interesting articles to make up for an amusing reading material from all walks of life, including book reviews of extraordinary tales, innovations breaking the glass roof of impossibility, out of the box games and quizzes and much more. Prof. Hansa has been supportive and given us freedom to pursue various activities without any objection with lot of love and affection. She has also provided us with insightful discussions about various projects. She is one of the strongest pillars of the E-SYNC Association and has played a pivotal role in shaping E-SYNC and its daughter clubs. She has more than 5 years of teaching experience and she has published 7 papers in International Journals & Conferences. We are very Prof. thankful to you Ma'am and look forward to your support and advice for Hansa Shingrakhia our future ventures.

I am very pleased to be associated with the department of Electronics & Communication and the E-sync. I personally have seen the growth of this organization, the journey from beginning. If you say “hi!” I definitely want to hear what you have to say and eager to work with you to take E-sync and everyone to a greater height. One of my main objectives this year is to increase the “bandwidth” of the student association and make a National Level Students Association. I always say “If you help E-sync to Vatsal N Shah grow, it will in turn help you up to grow”. Some amazing feedbacks that we got for our hard work. My experience @ EXCIDUINO The workshop "EXCIDUINO" on Arduino literally opened the world of microcontrollers for me more than any book could possibly do. You know that your work is a success when people from not only your own college (INDUS UNIVERSITY) but also from different colleges across the city have only words of appreciation for you and nothing else. The workshop was conducted in University campus on Aug 1-2, 2014. The main part of the workshop being the Arduino microcontroller not only emphasized on its theoretical concepts but also was also on its practical application. The seminar was conducted by Priyank Mistry, a person who himself has extraordinary experiences from his real life ventures in this subject. Amazing work Esync, really looking forward to more workshops like this. Kudos to Team - Esync. -Mihir Bansal 5th Sem E.C.

ESYNC hosted a kite festival on 11th January, 2014 at Indus University. The campus became vibrant with this kite festival, which was celebrated with colours of joy. The chief guest for the event was the HOD of E&C dept., Prof. R N Mutagi. There were around 60 students, 19 faculties and staff members who tried their luck to win the sky. The

serene blue sky with colourful kites looked splendid. Besides winning the sky, ESYNC aimed to win the hearts of the poor by distributing clothes collected during the kite festival. The main vision of the event was ” Like the kites, ESYNC too soars high to touch the skies, to be the best in the world.”

Sayonara, a Bollywood themed farewell to our seniors of 2010 batch was celebrated with great pomp and joy. The event was graced by our HOD Prof. R N Mutagi, our professors and students of all the semesters. The event was anchored by some great orators with flamboyance and captivated the audience with their wit and humor. A variety of innovative and interactive games were conducted for the entertainment of the seniors which included a unique kind of housie, Antakshari with a great twist and performances by our junior most Hrithiks and Arijits enthralling all. A special unplugged version of hit songs were sung by Chiranjiv Vaghela. The final year students got all emotional and nostalgic about their college life as they shared an amazing rapport with their faculties and friends. Priyank Mistry and Harsh Patel, ex-President, Esync briefly shared their experiences. Mementos were given to all the final year students as a remembrance in the form of scrolls and at the end of the programme lipsmacking refreshments were served along with a performance by our all time favourites Premal Mehta and Priyank Srivastava. The highlight for the event was the photo-booth where funky props were used and engaged one and all.

H.O.D Prof. R N Mutagi

his column will give you a glimpse of our professors so that we can get to know about them. In this edition we interviewed our H.O.D Prof. R N Mutagi. Prof. R N Mutagi is a senior member of “ IEEE Communication Society ” and “ Signal Processing Society ”, “Fellow of Institute of Electronics and Telecom Engineering ”, “ Fellow of Broadcast Engineering Society ” and Professional Engineer of Ontario, Canada. Working for 27 years at the Space Application Center in ISRO, he contributed to the development of analog and digital satellite communication systems for major sitcom projects, which included ”SITE”, ”STEP”, ”APPLE”, and India’s first geo – synchronous GSAT satellite which showed his different position with increasing responsibility. He worked with Canadian Aerospace Companies, managed a design team for development of Sband transponders for the Japanese H2 transfer vehicle. Here is an excerpt from his interview:1.) You have a lot of experiences that we could learn from. Could share some of your experiences at ISRO with us? I joined ISRO in 1972 and my first project was a distance education experiment, it was a country wide experiment and we developed the hardware for a direct satellite reception. Presently, you are all aware that you use all these direct reception sets and receive direct video from satellite. It’s very common today, even a small kid knows, but it was different back then. We were the first in India to develop the hardware for a receiver that receives information directly from satellite. Initially it was analog based. That was the experiment for distance education. We set up our system in 2400 most remote places in 6 states so that the people there could get education and information about farming, fishing and all such topics were

taught to them through this. Initially it was an experimental project and subsequently it became a actual system and somewhere around 1980 I converted this analog transmission to digital so that several users can simultaneously use that transponder. That was my contribution in converting analog to digital. 2.) Suppose you had a great idea and you were told that you cannot implement it. How did you react and how did you overcome it? That’s a tricky question (laughs). Most of the ideas that I generated…well, I was lucky in that context because I proposed my ideas every 6 months. In ISRO every six months they conduct a budget review and the engineers are supposed to give their proposals, ask for the budget, ask for people and carry out the project… every six months I used to give a new topic, get the budget

and get started. Sometimes. I had more than one idea so I used to share them with my colleagues. For example, a lot of idea about the spread spectrum techniques was given by me to my colleague who started that project and successfully they conducted that experiment via satellite. A lot of these systems that you study now like TDMA , SSMA they were all conducted by ISRO as experimental projects in early 80’s and were conducted using our own or foreign satellites. For example TDMA we conducted using the French satellite SYMPHONY and subsequently we conducted other researches using our APPLE satellite. 3.) Apart from academics what other co-curricular activities are you interested in? I have tried every sport. I was a cricket player in my college and also played for ISRO for many years. I travelled a lot for these

matches. Played on inter-center level. We had a lot of tournaments between elite institutes like IIM, PRL, NID, ISRO. I used to play carrom, table tennis etc. I have many certificates too. So yes, I used to be a sportsman but nowadays, I don’t even watch the matches on TV. I think it is a waste of time for me but I had lot of interest. There was a time when the first football world cup series aired, I used to wake up at 3 a.m. to watch the match but now I don’t feel like it maybe its because of my age.

We are planning to make this club a national level club within the next three years. What are your views regarding that? It’s great. I think it should have come much earlier. In fact, under this banner you are able to do a lot of things and there are so many ideas you have so it’s really great. It’s really great that you are planning to take this initiative to national level and I hope you all succeed. 8.) You have already published a book: “Digital Communication: Theory, Technique and Application”, is there another one in process? Yes, right now I am working on Satellite Communication. It’s supposed to have been completed by September, but it is delayed and I am sure next year people can read it. 9.) Finally, what are you planning to do in the future? Play with my grandchildren.

, the Swiss pharmaceutical company has announced that its eye care division “Alcon” has entered into an agreement with Google to license its ‘smart lens technology’ for all commercial ocular medical uses. The collaboration will ultimately marry Google’s expertise in miniaturized electronics, low power chip design and micro fabrication with Alcon’s expertise in physiology and visual performance of the eye, clinical development and evaluation with the potential to address ocular conditions. The technology will help diabetic patients manage their disease by providing a continuous, minimally invasive measurement of the body’s glucose levels via the smart contact lens. The digital treatment is designed to measure tear fluid in the eye and connects wirelessly with a mobile device for people living with presbyopia who can no longer read without glasses, the lens also has the potential to provide

Nowadays cell phones play a vital role in our life. So I am writing an app review of most useful app for students the Camscanner. This app is used to digitize the hard copies, so ‘one book many readers’. I want to share my usage of this app with you. I have nearly scanned 20,000 pages approximately. So when you don't find any book in the library and you want to save the money by not buying an expensive book then you choose to download a soft copy from Internet but many books are not available easily on Internet, Then this app can save your money. You can take the

Hazel & Augustus immediately hit it off & embark on a roller coaster ride of romance, sadness & love while searching for the author of their favorite book AN IMPERIAL AFFLICTION in Amsterdam. Their relationship is all the more miraculous given that Hazel’s other companion is her oxygen tank & Augustus joking about his prosthetic leg. They make “OKAY” their word which signifies the simple bond they share despite the less-thanordinary circumstances that are thrust upon them. While on

Along with the acoustic modem that allows the submarine to communicate underwater, it has environmental sensors, a computer system that allows it to navigate underwater, batteries that keep it going for eight hours and modules for radio and satellite communication. Crucial for search and rescue operations, an onboard sonar device finds sunken objects by emitting pulses of sound and listening for echoes. It has already helped to find a lost container in the port of Porto. They are useful for three main applications: first, for port security. Second, for environmental monitoring, which is very important to us. And third, for inspections of the ships that dock at the port. UnderwaterRobots In recent years, robotic underwater vehicles have become more common in a variety of industrial and civil sectors. It can explore seas and rivers, gathering in groups to solve problems together, if they learn to cooperate. How can they teach robots? Engineers in the Portuguese town of Porto are working on SU N RISE , a European research project developing drone submarines, which talk to each other using sound signals. Computer Science Professor Chiara Petrioli is the project coordinator: “What you see here are underwater robots that are able to communicate and cooperate with each other, creating the socalled ‘Internet of underwater things’,” she explains. “It’s a novel concept that allows different devices, such as sensors and robots, to exchange information. This opens up new ways to monitor our oceans, lakes and rivers.” A group of robots each carrying a particular set of sensors will scour the seabed looking for a lost object or a chemical leak. By working together, they can collect

a lot of information in a short space of time. How the robots communicate with each other? The acoustic communication is very similar to how humans speak. The vehicles talk to each other underwater, using a range of frequencies that goes from the frequencies produced by our voices to the inaudible acoustic spectrum. What can robots see underwater? The submarines transmit data to a control center on the ground. Their exact position and some environmental factors such as the temperature and chemical composition of the sea water – are then displayed. How the drones are controlled? Several vehicles operate in the area at the same time and we control them all from this center. They give them instructions like ‘Move from point A to B’, and they monitor their movement almost in real time. They use an acoustic channel when they’re underwater

SUCCESS STORY OF SUPER SENIOR

T

he journey growing up as a person went very well with Indus. There were many ups and downs in this whole journey but that vigor kept me going. Though I started very well academically there were some setbacks too. I wanted to enjoy college life as in all its spheres . I became coordinator for all the sports as well as cultural events. I also performed several skits and mimes in cultural fests and was awarded runners up medal in quiz couple of times. Somehow, I managed to get an internship in Honeywell Automation India Limited at Pune which proved beneficial for me in many ways. This undergrad phase was full of joy, got some really amazing friends for life, also learnt the harsh reality of life and had some failures too. I wanted to pursue my dreams of studying abroad. There was much needed support from the Indus faculties. So far it is going very well. I got 50% scholarship in my course here due to my scholastic achievements in Indus. Initially it was a very tough time dealing with all the things here on my own, but now it has become a part of my life .I also started working here as a front desk assistant. That was my first paying job. Later, I got an internship which will build my base as a full time career in Supply chain. All I want to convey to you all is develop your overall personality not just by studying all the time like a geek and also not by just passing time on all the other activities.
