Guggul or guggulu is considered to have anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic, antiseptic, thyroid stimulant, anthelminitic, vulnerary, antidiabetic, and hyperlipidemic properties, and many more (Ramesh & Saralakumari, 2012). Science explores guggul for cancer and continues to verify gugguls' use in diabetes.
Constituents guggulsterone and gugulipid have shown to interrupt the signaling pathway of b-catenin (Jiang et al., 2013). B-catenin signaling pathway was downregulated inducing apoptosis cell death of human breast cancer cells and growth was inhibited (Jiang et al., 2013). The gugulipids showed potent inhibiting of breast cancer cell growth. Similarly, in men, guggulu Commiphora mukul is antiproliferative against four human cancer cell lines in prostate cancer (Shen et al., 2016). Isolated compounds from guggulu's resin were antiproliferative- arresting cell cycle in prostate cancer (Shen et al., 2016). Gugulipids in Commiphora mukul resin inhibits cancer cell growth in skin, lung, and colon cancers and leukemia (Xiao & Xiao, 2012). For those individual who choose chemotherapy, gugulipids anticancer property also is a potent chemo-protective (Xiao & Xiao, 2012).
For cases of diabetes, Commiphora mukul lowers serum glucose levels, triglyceride LDL & HDL (Shirazi et al., 2015). Guggulsterones inhibits the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver (Ramesh & Saralakumari, 2012). Commiphora mukul resin reduced total lipids, phospholipids, cholesterol, glycolipids and more, showing a protective effect on the brain of diabetic rats (G et al., 2015). Extract of guggul can aid in glucose metabolism in diabetes (Bellamkonda et al., 2011). Safe taken in high doses, guggulu may reduce cholesterolemia and LDL levels in those who eat a Western diet (Szapary et al., 2003).
