Abstracts We collected information on patient’s clinical features, surgery performed and the complications in each case. Results: The results showed that of a total of 120 surgeries performed, 11 had complications, of which 8 patients had hematomas, 1 had local infection and 2 patients had nerve injuries. Around 95% of the patients were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome. Conclusion: We showed that the subperiosteal midface-lift by temporal approach is a procedure that helps restore the relations of soft tissues with the underlying structures giving a more youthful expression. This is a technique that produces good cosmetic results in most cases, causing an increase in the malar region, improving the nasolabial fold and enhancing the small jowls. Volumetric senile browlift (VSB), an innovative technique based on earlier practices, produces eyebrow repositioning associated to volumetric augmentation through fat flaps, allowing full rejuvenation of the upper periorbital region. Objective: The authors evaluate the efficacy of the VSB in patients with ptotic eyebrows and senile orbit/sunken eyelid. Methods: The charts of 20 patients treated with VSB by the senior author from January 2009 to February 2010 were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The age range of the 20 patients in this study was 44–70 years. All patients were female. The patients presented with complaints of tired-appearing and excess of skin on the upper eyelids. All the patients were satisfied with their 1-year postoperative aesthetic results. There were no complications. Conclusion: VSB is ideal for patients with ptotic eyebrow and senile orbit/sunken eyelid who need eyebrow repositioning and volumetric augmentation. VSB achieves excellent results through a standard upper eyelid blepharoplasty incision and allows the surgeon to perform a concomitant periorbital augmentation achieving full rejuvenation of the region. Conflict of interest: None declared.

26 Nasal dorsum augmentation with diced costal cartilage wrapped in temporal fascia L.G. Patrocinio 1,∗ , T.G. Patrocinio 1 , M.M. Naves 1 , C.V. Pereira 2 , D.R. Parreira 3 1

Department of Otorhinolaryngology & Craniomaxillofacial Surgery, Federal University of Uberlandia, Uberlandia, Brazil 2 OTOFACE – Recife, Recife, Brazil 3 University of Brasilia Medical School – UNB, Brasilia, Brazil Introduction: Several grafts and/or implants have been used for dorsal augmentation. In some cases, especially the traumatic, non-caucasian, and multi-operated ones, the amount of augmentation is higher than the usually available from septal and auricular conchal autografts. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of nasal dorsum augmentation using diced autologous costal cartilage wrapped in temporal fascia in rhinoplasty. Design: A prospective study of 5 consecutive patients who underwent dorsal nasal augmentation with diced autologous costal cartilage wrapped in temporal fascia, during a 1-year period. Setting: One major academic medical center. Main outcome measures: The evaluation included regular clinical examination in the office, photographic study, postoperative complications, and the degree of aesthetic satisfaction of the patient. Results: All patients were satisfied and with no aesthetic complaints. No dorsum irregularities, graft bent or palpable cartilages were found. Graft absorption appears to be minimum in a 1-year follow-up. Discussion: Currently there are several techniques to achieve dorsum augmentation. The use of autologous costal cartilage remains a demanding task in rhinoplasty. To achieve precise control and long-term impact on the shape and alignment of the graft is extremely challenging. In an attempt to alleviate these problems, the use of diced costal cartilage involved in temporal fascia has grown increasingly. Conclusion: Nasal dorsum augmentation using diced autologous costal cartilage wrapped in temporal fascia is very safe, with a low complication rate, and a high patient aesthetic satisfaction. Conflict of interest: None declared. doi:10.1016/j.ijom.2011.07.1052 27 Supra-apical posterior ostectomy and zygomatic miniplate anchorage—a new approach to treat severe skeletal anterior open bites P. School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Griffith University, Gold Coast, QLD, Australia 2 Private Practice, Belo Horizonte, Brazil Background: Correction of severe anterior open bites is impossible with traditional orthodontic treatment and a conventional Le Fort I impaction osteotomy is often the only alternative. Skeletal anchorage is becoming a popular therapeutic tool in orthodontics and miniplates in the zygomatic buttress area can serve as anchorage for maxillary posterior intrusion.
