EDITORIAL NOTE

Downloaded by [Northeastern University] at 18:39 09 October 2014

Norma Parker Addresses The first Norma Parker address was delivered in 1969, at the Eleventh Biennial Conference of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), by the then President, Professor John Lawrence. Since that time, as Colin Benjamin noted in the fourth address made in 1975, it has become a tradition of the Association for the opening address of each AASW Conference made by the Federal President the Norma Parker Address ‘‘to present an image of the state of development of the profession of social work and an analysis of issues for the future of the Association and its members’’. Twenty such addresses have been made to date and, collectively, they provide a unique insight into the history of social policy, the AASW, and social work in Australia. With a generous bequest from a former Australian Social Work editor, Mary McLelland (19661975), a special online issue of the Journal is in preparation, bringing together excerpts from these addresses with several commissioned papers that analyse this material from different perspectives. The last Norma Parker address was made in 2008, as an interrupted conference cycle has brought a halt to this tradition. It is timely to provide a substitute medium in the form of the Journal’s editorial to present the Norma Parker address until the conference cycle is re-established. I invited the current AASW President, Professor Karen Healy, to write a Norma Parker address, which has been published below as the lead paper in this Issue. The Issue also contains several other papers that debate the state of development of the profession of social work. Christine Bigby Editor
