Why motivation matters?

"...having intrinsic motivation is very important, because it drives me to struggle more. For instance…I learned on my own like reading the school books, sometimes I borrowed friends' book and I also took English course with my English teacher...".

(Hadi, 2014. p.5)

He did not have...
any interesting English teacher.
much opportunity to communicate orally with the language.
In EFL context, there are A FEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXPOSURE to English language (Spada and Lightbown, 2013, p. 91).
He learned grammar in isolation, not in context.

The focus ...was on learning the tenses and replicating the sentence examples provided by the teacher.

You might not be able to find any friendly native speakers where you live, but If you can't find anyone who'll actually help you, don't worry, you'll still be able to figure out if they can understand you.

They have the OPPORTUNITIES to use language (Exposure).

A GENERAL LECTURE
Why I don't speak English
AS MUCH AS I wish?
Marham Jupri Hadi, M.Ed. General Lecture "Oral Skills Development". UNW, Dec. 6, 2014

Students are trying to translate from their native language into English.
Production "blocking" is occurring due to NERVOUSNESS, LACK OF CONFIDENCE, etc.
The speaker is looking for a specific word, rather than using simple language to describe what is meant.
There aren't enough conversation OPPORTUNITIES in or outside of class.
Students aren't able to speak to peers (for example: mixed classes of adults and teenagers).
Exam preparation focuses on grammar, vocabulary, etc. and leaves little time for active use.
