Piligrinov otpor [Piligrin\'s Resistance]

The paper studies a long narrative poem by the Ragusan poet Mavro Vetranović (1482-1576) entitled Piligrin. The poem is considered in relation to its uneven critical reception, to its complicated manuscript transmission, and to the classical and Renaissance influences within the larger European context. It is concluded that the poem’s title should be identical to the name of its protagonist, that the poem could not have been written before 1550, and that the hitherto suppressed homoerotic meanings, especially in the episode featuring an amorous boar, play an important role in the interpretation of this fascinating work as well as Vetranović’s poetic oeuvre as a whole.
