Istanbul Carpet Week (6-9 October 2016) is a new event on the international rug calendar. Organised by the Istanbul Carpet Exporters’ Association, the week is designed to showcase the products, skills and knowledge of one of the world’s oldest traditional centres of weaving. The programme kicks off with the Istanbul International Carpet Conference with local and international speakers on a wide variety of topics, including Carol Sebert of Creative Matters, Erbil Tezcan of Wool & Silk, Rob Leahy, Prof. Dr. Hamdi Ünal, Stefano Ionescu, Udo Hirsch and Hadi Maktabi. The week includes the awards ceremony for IHIB’s 10th annual National Carpet Design Contest, networking sessions, and B2B opportunities for buyers and retailers to explore with Turkish rug companies. The National Carpet Design Contest promotes the work of young Turkish designers, showcases the talent of a new generation and provides an inspiring indicator of the future of carpet design. The awards ceremony takes place on 7 October from 7:30pm until 11pm at the Renaissance Polat Hotel in Bakirköy, overlooking the Sea of Marmara close to Ataturk International Airport. A cocktail party for visitors will be followed by a banquet dinner and live music. There will also be an exhibition of the ten rarest antique Turkish weavings from the private collections of IHIB members. These rugs and kilims will be only on display in the entrance hall of ITKIB on the 6th and 7th of October. The Istanbul Carpet Conference will take place on 6 October 2016 from 9.30am until 1pm with a series of talks from experts from around the world.
