Procedural Document: Mrs. Mallard's Journey to Freedom
Introduction
When I started on Chopin's "The Story of an Hour", the protagonist, Mrs. Mallard seemed like an old woman that was afflicted by a trouble heart. She is described as having a fair and calm face whose lines were a representation of being repressed. It seems that the author places special attention to the social situation of a time when the woman was a prisoner of her husband. Marriages were not always about mutual love experienced between two people at the time, but more about monetary comfort, social status and even acceptance within the society. It seems that Mrs. Mallard has been trapped by her marriage for long time, though it was not an arranged form of union but that which was coerced because of the pressures that she felt from her colleagues and family.
So when her husband dies, she cries with sudden and wild abandonment. She became woman freed through random chance so she is now overtaken by the joy of her freedom. She did not depend on happiness according to her husband, but on her own strength as an individual. The following is a list of steps that she took down the road toward personal fulfillment. If you follow the steps that she laid down, perhaps you too will learn not to depend on others for personal fulfillment. The steps toward happiness may not start on that path necessarily just as seen with the Mrs. Mallards, character in 'The story of an hour.'
Procedure
Mrs. Mallard is originally a compassionate and sympathetic person who is not aware of the roles that she plays within the society or who she is as a person. When this is the case, the society decides this role for the person and takes their freedom in the process.
Mrs. Mallard embarks on her journey to happiness and personal freedom by first succumbing to the ideals of the society which means she marries Brently. Her husband does love her but she does not feel the same for him, which makes her seem repressed. Succumbing to ideals is just the first step of getting to know oneself and ones position in the world.
She takes comfort in the knowledge that nothing is going to change her circumstances, but she lies in wait and hopes for a time that she will be free. It is better to reserve one's strength for the time that it is needed.
She realizes the opportunity has come at the time of her husband's death. She does mourn for him, but she also realizes all of the years that she would spend as a free person. After all love is nothing compared to independence. We all need to realize when to seize freedom when the opportunity presents itself.
Just like Mrs. Mallard when she did compromise even for love, you should neither falter when freedom is at stake. It should hold the highest priority.
She learns to take every moment as beautiful as possible considering that it was the last hour of her life. She did die before the doctors could help her. So embrace every moment of the new found freedom because it is a new life that has been created and may not last long.
She was horrified when she found out that her husband was not actually dead because her dream of freedom was being threatened. One needs to fight for their freedom especially to the time that it is being threatened to regain dignity and self-respect.

Summary
The journey to freedom should begin from slavery in most cases, because for one to know the significance of freedom, they have to have felt the chains of being imprisoned. From then, one travels the path that will ultimately lead them to freedom or not. The basis is the journey and the self-discovery that one makes when they get an opportunity to become free. A discovery that freedom lies in your hands can be made because you are ultimately in control of your story.
