Relatos de viagens, mapas e noticiário de guerra: representações do Nordeste brasileiro antes das instalações militares norte-americanas (1940-1941)

Este trabalho trata das representações do Nordeste brasileiro produzidas nas páginas do jornal The New York Times no recorte temporal imediatamente anterior ao ingresso oficial dos Estados Unidos na Segunda Guerra Mundial, nos últimos dias de 1941. Se apropria das discussões sobre representação e espaço para pensar nas formas como a região é apresentada nas páginas desse diário norte-americano. Analisa alguns dos suas notícias, reportagens e resenhas literárias evidenciando em textos e mapas as imagens de um Nordeste ligado a diversos temas, de oportunidades de negócios até ações subversivas do Eixo passando pelo turismo internacional. Também dá conta das aproximações e distanciamentos com espaços variados, incluindo Oeste norte-americano, o Nordeste freyriano, a Amazônia e o Sul dos imigrantes italianos e alemães. Também relaciona essas representações com as visões da América Latina que circulavam nos Estados Unidos, a conjuntura da guerra e as ações do governo norte-americano em torno da aproximação com o Brasil. Abstract: This paper analyzes the representations of the Brazilian Northeast produced in the pages of The New York Times in the context immediately preceding the official entry of the United States in World War II, on the last days of 1941. It appropriates the discussions about representation and space to think about ways in which the region is represented on pages of such newspaper. Examines news, reports and book reviews, some texts and maps showing images of a Northeast linked to various topics including business opportunities, Axis subversive actions and international tourism. Also it construes similarities and differences between various spaces, including the West, the Northeast of Gilberto Freyre, the Amazon and the Brazilian South of Italian and German immigrants. In addition, relates these representations with the visions of Latin America that circulated in the United States, the situation of war and the actions of the US government approximation with Brazil.
