Pros: Music Cons: Censorship The Bottom Line: MILTON NASCIMENTO, 1973 Stern melodies aroused by a military dictatorship which nearly killed the album. MILTON NASCIMENTO and 1973’s Milagre dos Peixes * are wonders by virtue of resisting. Adorned by TEMPO IMAGINARIO’s ** jazz-fusion, NASCIMENTO comes to their heads, layered sensuality siding subdued protest. The title track’s ascending melancholia contrasts the vastness of Brazilian (Minas Gerais’ ***) nature with authoritarian cupidity – killing love though never suffocating our pain. Tearing curtains up demanding eyes NASCIMENTO shakes unspeakable scars – for we have heartfelt fishes and painful forests. Across Hoje e Dia de El-Rey ****, NASCIMENTO makes intense use of Spanish guitars with Moorish and Angolan traces. Minas’ alchemy invokes WAGNER TISO’s Moog, NIVALDO ORNELAS’ kaleidoscopic sax solos and wordless vocals – sometimes a gravelly voice (GONZAGUINHA, would be DORIVAL CAYMMI) intonates “My Son” and NASCIMENTO spookily whispers “Don’t go away”, abrasive mood accomplished, as miles of Brazilians resorted to exile, as reminder of censured lyrics (throw lies and soldiers at the streets, for the day is due to fight, the King will be held accountable for hatred and injustice). Pablo N.2 conveys a Latin fiesta, something unusual for an album track (#5 overall). Intended as a companion to Pablo, a censured track with surreal lyrics sung by infant NICO BORGES (LO BORGES’ younger brother), the absence of Pablo’s older sister brings Milagre a more harrowing and sprawling appeal. Ringing acoustics, calm handclaps, jubilant vocalizes never speak their hearts out not to get in the in the way of words. A Chamada ***** - NASCIMENTO’s legendary vocalizes erupt between nature and politics, multitudes of sounds spam from ethers (then we will record, someone whispers before anyone breathes). Mixed effervescence finds enough plenty to convey protest and mordacious flattery more effectively than anything PETER GABRIEL and PAUL SIMON recorded in their latter days. Tema dos Deuses’ ****** barefoot travelogue transverses NANA VASCONCELOS’ awkward rhythmic virtue and RADAMES GNATALLI’s assembled cascades. Humble yet steady details, YES or Carmina Burana pale in comparison. Maybe an epic soundtrack to nowhere else, for the sake of nearing otherness. A Ultima Sessao de Musica ******* brings PINK FLOYD’s Alan’s Psychedelic Breakfast and LOVE’s You Set the Scene to the dance hall aftermath. TISO’s harpooning piano crosses over a sketchy litany of forks and spoons. A great existentialist track from the 1970s, a brief squall so human in its unredeemable incompleteness. Carlos, Lucia, Chico e Thiago goes on provocatively in ludic, deceptive impenetrability. A suite of vocal emissions, some pretty (angelic crescendos borne out of NASCIMENTO’s privilege) and other unsettling (as TOM ZE) bring from the margins of Brazilian “proper” music the speak and spell of countryside Brazilians and Afro-Brazilians harkened by some Afro-Fusion-Jazz sax harmonies (PAULO MOURA). Original subtitle: I am an old black lady here staring at the sun. Os Escravos de Jó ******** overlaps Brazilian nursery rhymes, Black slavery and resistance, spilling over multiple layers of slave chants (including Samba extraordinaire CLEMENTINA DE JESUS) and NANA's dizzy array of atabaques, xequeres voicing working defiance through incrusted fragments pushed against NASCIMENTO’s rolling call. Ebullient mystique spilling blood amidst the rags of discrimination, no power so overwhelming you can’t dance it on to bring the inside out (nearly dispensing with ingenious lyrics).

overwhelming you can’t dance it on to bring the inside out (nearly dispensing with ingenious lyrics). Eventually consecrated by great late ELIS REGINA in accessible, yet no less dramatic mode, Os Escravos de Jó forms an early culmination of NASCIMENTO’s monumental critique of Brazil-Minas ethnoscape.
