SENSE OF A PLACE WHAT Sense of a place is a combination of characteristics that makes a place special , outstanding , unique and interesting in its own way. Sense of place involves the human experience form in a landscape, the local knowledge and folklore or myth. Sense of place also grows from identifying oneself in relation to a particular piece of land on the surface of planet Earth. That is a sense that requires time, energy, and paying attention to realize. For some people, sense of place is a subjective term to indicate how ones belonging or rooted to a place that make significant or value as part of their lives. While other may conceive sense of a place as perception or temporary feeling which one gains when come to a place with outstanding or vibrant character. In a short words, it is a term used to represent the feeling from the inner heart when comes to a certain place. But ones to recognize the feeling must be alert and notice the surrounding through the creation of experience, observatory, appreciation and focus. It is a feeling that lost in nowadays chapter of history, when the technology starts to take over the human heart.

SPACE AND ANTHEM The creation sense of a place starts from the feelings where ones feels connected to the space which indicate by the stimulation of the 5 sense. In this particular situation, space planning and surrounding environment plays a big role to create the sense by providing elements of design in the space. Why space make a big impact to the atmosphere and thus create the sense of a place? To be understands about the impact and creation, ones must be know about the geographic concept of a space. Geographic space defined as a space that encircle the planet or in orbit body, through which biological moves. It is one element which differentiated from outer space and inner space, physical and mental. According to Tuan's definition, sense of a place is that a place comes into existence when human start give meaning or value to a part of the larger, undifferentiated space. In simple words, sense of place creating by human when they start zoning the particular space, by giving names or identity to the area, which separated from the undefined space that surrounds it. Some place may not be same like other place. They

may not have the same feel or sense. This is depends to the how human may perceive or value the space compare to other. Some places, have been given stronger identity, meanings, names or definition by society than other place. These are place known and said to have a strong sense of a place. Places said to have a strong sense of a place have a strong character and identity that is create by the human since they felt, appreciate and value the area. They may have felt the feeling of belonging and rootedness to the place which then be strengthen by experience, activities, stories and memories. Sense of a place is a social phenomenon that exists independently of one individual perception, feeling, experience, knowledge, yet is dependent on human engagement for its existence. Such feeling may be form from the natural environment, but mostly it is more to the combination of cultures and nature in landscape or environment setting. Sense of place may also come indirectly when ones feel dependent to the space. They may start as necessity to human, but then when activities, experience and memories collected, the sense of a place may exist in the heart of human by its own.

PLACELESSNESS Where there is a place with stronger sense of a place, there is also a place which lack sense of place. This can be happen when one space lack of identity and value to the local authorities. Beside, the place may not be significant or necessity to the surrounding area. When place have common character with a lot of other space, then sense of place may be at most low. The character and identity is the main things to create the sense, and when a space lack of those thing, so do the sense. As an example, shopping complex have low sense of a place. Why? Because it hold the same function, character and identity to other shopping complex which is big building, with goods for sell inside. It is begin with identity and character, where the sense starts to born.

LANDSCAPE PERSPECTIVE Understanding how sense of place develops and changes is relevant to understanding how people interact with their environment in general and considering how this interaction may become more sustainable. For these reasons, human geographers and social

psychologists have studied how a sense of place develops, including the importance of comparisons between places, learning from elders and observing natural disasters and other events. Of particular note is the importance of childhood experiences.Environmental psychologists have quantified links between exposure to natural environments in childhood and environmental preferences later in life. Learning about surrounding environments during childhood is strongly influenced by the direct experience of playing, as well as through the role of family, culture, and community. The special bond which develops between children and their childhood environments has been called a ‘primal landscape’ by human geographers. This childhood landscape forms part of people’s identity and constitutes a key point of comparison for considering subsequent places later in life. It is important in landscape design to create a space with the most significant ones can feel. Through the identity creation and character develop, so thus the function, a place can be ultimately significant and valuable to the surrounding human present. It is landscaper job to identify and be clear about how does a space character can give a big impact to the user and then be indicate through the design. It is where the term 'Design for people" comes from.

CONCLUSION To sum up, the term ‘sense of place’ is used to refer to the feelings people have for particular locations and the meaning they gain from a relationship with these places.

A

sense of place is one of the fundamental ‘felt’ senses a person develops along with the sense of self and sense of community. A sense of place is commonly associated with local areas: the places where people live, work and play. The historic environment is more than just mere material remains, it is central to how we see ourselves and our identity as individuals, communities and as a nation. In a transient and rapidly changing world, interest in who we are and where we’ve come from is increasingly important.

Our heritage is

therefore an inheritance that helps define our future by inspiring new ideas and providing solutions to problems we face today – including opportunities to learn from experience. ROBERT FROST''The land was ours before we were the land’s’’.
