ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN BRIEF
The Design Problem: To design a REJUVENATION CENTRE

"Because we cannot scrub our inner body we need to learn a few skills to help cleanse our tissues, organs and mind."
~ Sebastian Pole

With the advancement of technology, improvement of infrastructure and the growth of financial and economic opportunities in the urban areas, there has been rapid increase in the density of population. This in turn leads to overcrowded spaces and increased traffic conjunctions, smoke, dust, filthy air, dirty and unpleasant streets, noise. Consistent living in such strenuous circumstances leads to unhealthy and stressful mind condition.

"In the bigness of cities, we are losing the common human touch."

With the constant change in the lifestyle of the urban India, from living in villages surrounded by clean air from farms and grass lands to living in multistoried flats amidst the dust and pollution from vehicles, they lose their connect to the earth, nature and peace that human has lived with since time immemorial.

Design Proposal
In an attempt to promote the mental and physical well-being and to also provide an opportunity to relieve the building stress and pressure in the society, the Studio proposes to design a Rejuvenation center at NH-8

Rejuvenation is a medical discipline focused on the practical reversal or opposition of the aging process. It is also the phenomenon of vitality and freshness being restored.

Medical science was one area where surprising advances had been made in ancient times in India. There are evidences to prove the existence of advancement in areas of plastic surgery extraction of cataracts dental surgeries etc. These evidences have been from as early as
8th century BC by Sushruta. He is not only one of the earliest pioneers in surgery in the world but also the earliest to study human anatomy.

The use of plants, soil and other natural elements as healing agents is ancient even though there is no record of when it was first used for medicinal purpose. Yoga and Ayurveda are two principles of health restoration that are closely linked to the Indian philosophy of medicine. Ayurveda, the indigenous system of medicine in India literally meaning the science of living or knowledge of life is based solely on herbs and herbal compounds.

Keeping these in mind, the studio requires the student to study and select an alternate therapy (not allopathy) of rejuvenation and health restoration. The Indian Board of Alternate Medicine defines alternate medicine as means any form of medicine that is outside the mainstream of western medicine or conventional medicine as practiced a majority of doctors today. This term is loosely used to over all forms of medicine except allopathy.

Alternative medicine exists in all cultures to some degree and terms such as traditional medicine, indigenous medicine or folk medicine etc. are used to describe such practices. These medicines date back hundred or even thousands of years depending on the country and culture concerned.

There are more than 100 systems of alternative medicines still in practice all over the world. Every country, region or area has its own traditional system of health and medical care's such as for the Chinese it is acupuncture, for the French, magnetic healing; for the Germans, Heilpraxis; for the English, Herbalism; for India, Ayurveda with Siddha being widely practiced in the southern part of the country; for Japan, Shiatsu etc.

Some popular forms of alternative medicine are Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Yoga, Acupuncture, Acupressure, Magneto therapy, Shiatsu, Herbalism, Meditation, Aromatherapy, Bach Flower Remedies, Chromo therapy, Diet therapy and Hydropathy

Vicinity, Connectivity and Site
The VVCMC (Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation) governs a large area, and villages in
Vasai-Virar tehsil in Maharashtra state, Western India comprising the most populated part of Palghar district. It is an extended suburb of Mumbai. The City is well connected to Mumbai by Western Railway and through Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.

Even though being very close to the financial centre of the country, it has managed to maintain its intimacy with the nature and environment of the zone. It is a prime location along the coast of the Arabian Sea on the west and the wild untouched forest on the east and the Vaitarna river on the North. Considering its proximity to the MMR and its commercial activities and being the centre of the entire district proves it to be a strong location for activities requiring focused attention for large groups.
