SECOND DRAMA CLASS 1.2016 1) Warm-up: Commands They walk around the space and you give the commands with some song (low volume) is playing. When you say “ONE”, students walk very slowly. When you say “TWO”, they run. When you say “THREE”, they jump. When you say “FOUR” they have to find a partner and say “Hello, my name is ____”. When you say “FIVE”, they “explode and fall on the floor. Teach one command at a time and practice it a little before going to the next one. Then play a little with two commands, and so on until you get them not to make mistakes with all the five at the same time. If they are doing good, make it hard saying three commands at once and they have to do all very quickly. You can change some commands or add new commands if you think you should. 2) Interaction: Mouth Mirror They should speak (no Portuguese!) any sentence (extremely) slowly and the other one has to try to copy it, try to speak together, at the same time as the leader. It’s very confusing at first but it can be a lot of fun if you “get it”. Also change leaders some time. If you have a very large group, it’s ok to split them up in two circles and have a leader for each circle. 3) Game: Detective Ask students if they know who Sherlock Holmes is and where he is from. Ask if they know other people who do detective work (there are some cartoons that they can relate to). Write on pieces of paper “victim”, “villain” and “Sherlock Holmes” (or another character, if you prefer). Distribute to the students so each one has a role in the game. Set a place where they have to act and start the game. The villains (you can have more than one) kill by blinking to the others. If a victim gets a blink, they have to act a very theatrical death. When Sherlock Holmes finds out who the villain is, he arrests him saying “You are under arrest”. 4) Technical: Slow Motion Race: It’s fun and we can see how anxious they are and work the pleasure of being on stage. It’s a simple race and the winner is the last one when the first one reaches the end. Don’t tell them that, only when the winner wins, remember them it was a slow motion race, so the last is the champ! 5) Imagination: Five pictures story Divide the class in groups and give to each group a scene to perform. It can be from a movie, a cartoon, a book, daily life situations or the script that you are already planning on doing. Tell them they’ll have to prepare this scene and present it in a sequence of five pictures. As if someone went to the theatre and took five pictures of the scene. Remind them that the scene must have beginning middle and end, even though they won’t speak or move. For the presentation, count five seconds between each picture, so they can prepare it and then freeze. 6) Improvisation: Perform the story Tell students that they have to perform the story from the previous exercise. Give them time to prepare. All students should speak at least one line and it has to be in English. Remind them that the scene must have beginning middle and end.
