Semeando um novo mundo: a Companhia de Jesus e a administração Habsburgo no Brasil

RESUMOSemeando um novo mundo é um estudo sobre o empreendimento missionário daCompanhia de Jesus no Brasil no período da União Ibérica. Entre 1549 e 1580, osjesuítas tiveram o privilégio da atividade missionária nos domínios de Portugal. Porém,no momento em que a Coroa espanhola anexou a Coroa portuguesa, ocorreu a aberturado campo missionário brasílico e a missionação jesuítica sofreu mudanças em suadinâmica e espaços de atuação. Tendo esses dados como indícios e fundamentando-nosnas cartas escritas pelos missionários, em documentos normativos da ordem e nomaterial auxiliar da evangelização que ela produziu no período (catecismos, manuais deconfissão, sermões, poesias e peças de teatro), investigamos os lugares onde as missõesjesuíticas se desenvolveram, a reorganização do seu aparato administrativo e as formasque elas tomaram entre 1580 e 1640. Percebeu-se, nesse exame, que os princípiosteológicos da salvação católica estabeleciam uma lógica para a atividade missionária e,de igual maneira, que a política ultramarina da Casa de Habsburgo dirigida à colôniaditava a dinâmica em que a missionação jesuítica se processava. Desse modo, esteestudo demonstra como as funções colonizadoras estabelecidas à evangelização pelosmonarcas espanhóis não estavam desassociadas de um projeto maior de construção deum império cristão universal, isto é, que a missionação jesuítica oferecia medidaspráticas de ordenamento social que, ao mesmo tempo em que executavam um programasalvífico, contribuíam para a entronização dos Filipes no Brasil.Palavras-chave: jesuítas, evangelização, colonização, Brasil Colonial, União Ibérica.ABSTRACTCreating a New World is a study on the missionary undertaking of the Society of Jesusin Brazil during the period of the Iberian Union. Between 1549 and 1580, the Jesuitshad the privilege of carrying out the missionary activity in Portuguese territories.However, at the moment in which the Spanish Crown was adding on the PortugueseCrown, the launching of the Brazilian mission camps regarding the indigenouspopulation began. The Jesuit Missions suffered changes to their dynamics and in theiractivity locations. Having this information as an indication and taking as a foundationthe letters written by the missionaries, in the order’s normative documents and in theauxiliary material on evangelization that was written during that period (Catechisms,confession manuals, sermons, poems and theatrical pieces), we research the locationsin which the Jesuit Missions developed, the re-organization of their administrativesystem and the ways they adopted between 1580 and 1640. Throughout thisexamination, it was observed that not only the Catholic theological principals ofsalvation established a logic for the missionary activity, but that the overseas politics ofthe House of Habsburg directed to the Colony dictated the dynamics in which the Jesuitmissionary activity was carried out. In this way, this study demonstrates that thecolonizing roles awarded to Evangelism by the Spanish monarchs were associated to agreater project: that of building a Universal Christian Empire. That is to say, the Jesuitmissionary activity offered practical social order measures in that, at the same time, itwas carrying out a salvation program, it was also contributing to the enthronement ofthe Phillips in Brazil.Key Words: Jesuit, evangelization, colonization, Brazil, Iberian Union.
