SSL/TLS Protocol Overview

In this paper an in depth elaboration and analysis of the SSL/TLS protocol is being performed. More specifically, the digital communication requirements that generated the need for this security protocol are being presented in order to better comprehend the operation of SSL/TLS. Furthermore, a detailed description of the protocol’s operation is taking place including the OSI/ISO layer approach and its handshake characteristics. Encipherment and encryption are the cornerstone functions of this protocol so detailed description of data integrity, encryption techniques, key length and cipher strength takes place. Although SSL and TLS are almost identical some significant differences that exist between them are being quoted. Last, but not least, a reference on the SSL/TLS in practice through web browsing takes place.
