TRANSPORT NETWORK SYSTEM IN NAMCHI TOWN OF SOUTH SIKKIM: A GEOGRAPHICAL APPRAISAL

Namchi is the promising pilgrim tourism centre of Sikkim. But the Physiography of the region is influencing the entire developmental process of Namchi. The present study attempts to highlight the transport system and related infrastructural scenario of Namchi, South Sikkim. An attempt has been made to analyse the transport flow system within the study area for understanding the spatio-temporal variation in transportation system. In addition, the aim of this paper is to highlight the problems of transportation system in the study area and to suggest some effective measures that need to be taken care of for the sustainable transport development of Namchi, South Sikkim. Methodologically, study is carried out based on extensive field work. Data of vehicle movement have been collected through traffic survey. Secondary data have been collected from Transport Department, Government of Sikkim. By analyzing all collected data and information, it is found that developing transport network system of Namchi will create an opportunity for better economic aspect.
