(ACRIDOIDEA : CATANTOPIDAE) hoping Li and Xiaonan Ti Department of Plant Protection, Xinjiang August-1st Agricultural College, tfrjmqi, Xinjiang 830052, China (Accepted Apr. 30, 1994)

Abstract

Two new species of the genus Conophyma Zub. were reported from Southern Xinjiang. Conophyma m i c a sp. nov. is similar to C. zhaosuensis Huang, but differs from it in the following characters: 1 ) rear angles of male supraanal plate obviously protruding, posterior margin of the supraanal plate acute-triangularly projecting medially ; 2 ) hind tibia redish brown. Conophyma rufitibia sp. nov. is similar toC. alajense Msthsenko, but can be differentiated from it in the characters: 1 ) furcula of the last tergite in male distinctly larger; 2 ) male cerci longer, obviously extending beyond the posterior median process of the supraanal plate; and 3) female ovipositor without a very distinct tooth on the outer ventral margin of the ventral valves. The new species, C. rufitibia, is also similar to C. dmasyi (Kuthy) , but different in the following points: 1 ) male supraanal plate nearly quadrate with a blunt tubercle at the middle of lateral margins; 2) male abdomen with 2 light longitudinal bands dorsally.

Conophyma spp. are mainly distributed in the mountains of Central Asia. Up to now only five species were described from Xinjiang. Now two new species are described from southern Xinjiang as following. Type specimens are deposited in the Department of Plant Protection, Xinjiang August-1st Agricultural College.

1 Conophymuamicus sp. nov. (Figs. 1-4) Male: body medium. Head short. Fastigium wide , anterior margin straight or slightly concave. Interocular distance twice as wide as the width of frontal ridge between antennae. Frontal ridge disappearing below the median occilus , slightly depressed around the median occilus with the other part flat. Antennae filiform, just reaching to the hind border of pronotum. Pronotum obviously punctuate; anterior border of the dise straight , hind border straight or perceptibly concave; median carina low, the lateral apparent almost along the whole length ; the three transverse sulci distinct , anterior sulcus cutting median carina , middle and hind sulci cutting median and lateral carinae; the hind sulcus crossing cauded of the center; prozona 2. 5 times as long as the metazone. Prosternal process short and conical. Mesosternal interapace about as long as broad. Metasternal lobes not touched. Meso- and metanotum and first abdomenal tergite coarsely punotuate. Hind femora slender, 3. 5-4. 0 times as long as broad. Hind tibia with 9 spines in outer series. Tympani; organ absent. Furcula large and triangular , 2 / 9 times as long as the supra-anal plate. Supra-anal platennearly quadrate , the width at the base about equal to the width at rear part : two lateral rear

Colouration : general colouration brown , dorsal part greenish brown and ventral pale brown or light yellowish brown. Inner aspects between upper and lower keels dark brown; upper knee lobes dark brown. Hind tibia redish brown, ventral parts lighter, with a indistinct pale ring near the base; base black. Furcula , most part of cerci, lateral margins and rear angles of supra-anal plate black. Female: unknown. Length of body 21.8-22.3 mm, of pronotum 4.5-4. 8 mm, of hind femora 13.1-14.0 mm. Holotype : male, Xinjiang : Hejin County, July 1981. Paratype : Male, Xinjiang :

Hejin County, July 1981. This new species is similar to Conophyma zhmsuensis Huang , but differs in the following aspects : 1) rear angles of male supra-anal plate obviously protruding , hind margin acuttriangularly projecting medially ; and 2) hind tibia redish brown. This new species was named amicus as a memorial of the close friendship in the past and future between Zhewei Liu and me. 2 Conophyma rufitibia sp. nov. (Figs. 5-81

Male : body submedium. Head short. Interocular distance twice as broad as the frontal ridge between antennae. Frontal ridge disappearing near clypeus, flat along the whole length except a slight depression around the median occilus. Eyes broadly oval, vertical diameter 1.4 times as great as the horizonal. Antennae short , not reaching the posterior border of pronotum. Pronotum short , slightly diverged caudedly ; coasely rugose; anterior and

posterior border straight , lightly concave medially ; median carina apparent; the lateral carinae apparent , diverged caudadly ; middle and hind sulci perceptible, the middle obviously cutting lateral carinae, the hind apparently cutting median and lateral carinae; prozona 2 . 5 times as long as the metazona. Prosternal process short and conical. Mesosternal interspace wide, 1. 5 times as broad as long. Metasternal lobes not touching each other. Meso- and metanotum coarsely rugose. Hind femora stout , 3 . 8 times as long as broad. Hind tibia with 9 spines in outer series. First abdomenal tergite coarsely rugose, tympanic organ absent. Furcula large and triangular. Supra-anal plate nearly quadrate , with a blumt tubercle in the middle of the lateral margins; (the two rear angles not projecting caudadly; the posterior margin roundedly protruding medially. (Fig. 5 Cerci long and conical, obviously exceeding supra-anal plate. Subgenital plate short and conical , apex rounded. Epiphallus tranverse (Fig. 6). Apical valves of penis of phallic complex stout (Figs. 7 , 8). Colouration : general colouration dark brown; the ventral part lighter; ventral part of head and thorax darkish grey, of abdomen darkish yellow. Pronotum with a longitudinal black strip just below the lateral carinae, the strip thinner medially ; with a irregular, longitudinal, black band in the middle of lobes of metazona. Outer aspect of hind femora with three oblique black bands occupying the upper halves petween upper and lower keels, sometimes the basal band interrupted as spots; most innar aspects of hind femora black: inner margin of ventral aspect red; inner and ventral aspects with a uncomplete pale yellow ring near knees. Base of hind tibia black, the other part pale rose-coloured. Abdomen with 2 light longitudinal bands dorsally. Dorsal part of first tarsus of hind leg pale rose-coloured. Furcula , lateral margins , the middle teeth and rear angles of supra-anal plate black. Apical and ventral parts of cerci black. Female: the most same to male, but differs in the following aspects: Mesosternal interspace wider , twice as broad as long : cerci shorter , reaching the middle of supra-anal plate. Ovipositer valves short, lowerouter margins of the lower valves without a large distinct tooth , but with some little denticles. Length of body: male 17 mm, female 18 mm; of pronotum: male 3. 7 mm, femlae 4 . 5 mm; of hind femora: male 10.4 mm, female 12. 1 mm.
